16 high school seniors vying for Distinguished Young Woman honors - The Tribune-Democrat

Sixteen high school seniors from across the state, including four from Cambria County, will compete for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Pennsylvania for 2013 at 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, 101 Community College Way, Johnstown.

The winner will represent the state at the national finals in Mobile, Ala., next June.

The state program, which began in 1958 as Pennsylvania’s Junior Miss, is celebrating 55 years.

The theme for the competition is “Olympic Spirit.”

Johnstown native Susan Horvath was the national title holder in 1979. Carly Henry of York is the current title holder.

Scholarships in the amount of $8,800 will be awarded, with the winner receiving a $5,000 scholarship.

The women are:

Taylor Morgan Davis, daughter of Shawn and Tracy Davis of Johnstown, is a senior at Westmont Hilltop High School. Davis, who plans to attend Carnegie Mellon University, will perform a lyrical dance titled “Hallelujah.”

Clare Elizabeth Stem, daughter of Richard and Beth Stem of Johnstown, is a senior at Greater Johnstown High School. Stem, who plans to attend Duquesne University, will perform a vocal presentation titled “I’m the Greatest Star.”

Kiersten Lynn Szczur, daughter of Kenneth and Shelley Szczur of Johnstown, is a senior at Greater Johnstown High School. Szczur, who plans to attend Duquesne University, will perform a vocal and tap dance titled “Gimme Gimme.”

Madalynn Elizabeth Swaltek, daughter of Laura and Frank Mikesic of Johnstown, is a senior at Westmont Hilltop High School. Swaltek plans to study forensic science/biology at Arcadia University or the University of Pittsburgh. She will perform a vocal presentation titled “One Moment in Time.”

Anna Katherine Owen of Berks County is the daughter of David and Naomi Owen of Kutztown. She is a senior at Kutztown Area High School and plans to attend Colgate University or Gettysburg College. Owen will present a hip-hop routine, “Apologize.”

Amelia Ann Bishop of Butler County is the daughter of Joseph and Lori Bishop of Butler. She is a senior at Butler Area Senior High School and plans to attend New York University or USC. She will present a pointe ballet titled “Anna’s Theme.”

Lauren Elizabeth Hayden of Lancaster County is the daughter of Kevin and Elizabeth Hayden of Elizabethtown. She is a senior at Elizabethtown Area High School. She will perform a vocal presentation titled “Come Wake Me Up.”

Katrina Marie Brintzenhoff of Berks County is the daughter of Keith and Karlene Brintzenhoff of Kutztown. She is a senior at Kutztown Area High School. Brintzenhoff, who plans to attend the University of Central Florida, will present a lyrical dance titled “Shouldn’t Be a Good in Goodbye.”

Savanna Smith of Indiana County is the daughter of Robert and Judy Smith of Indiana. She is a senior at Indiana Area Senior High School. Smith, who plans to attend Syracuse or Miami University, will perform a vocal presentation titled “Think of Me.”

Sarah Hope Fuller of York County is the daughter of Geralyn Fuller and David Fuller of

Stewartstown. She is a senior at York Catholic High School. Fuller, who plans to attend York or Lebanon Valley colleges, will present a tap dance titled “Hand Jive.”

Melanie Christine Boop of Clearfield County is the daughter of Roger and Bonnie Boop of West Decatur. She is a senior at Phillipsburg-Osceola Area High School. Boop, who plans to attend Shippensburg or Kutztown universities, will present a baton routine titled “Party Rock Anthem.”

Michaela Erin Naulty of Lancaster County is the daughter of William Jr. and Marie Naulty of Denver. She is a senior at Cocailico High School. Naulty, who plans to attend Millersville University, will perform a dance presentation titled “Domino.”

Maria Cinti of Luzerne County is the daughter of Ciro and Dawn Cinti of Plains. She is a senior at Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre. Cinti, who plans to attend Misericordia University, will present a tap dance titled “Wizards in Winter.”

Michelle Victoria Siwert of Centre County is the daughter of Louis and Maria Siwert of Bellefonte. She is a senior at Bellefonte Area High School. Siwert, who plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh, will perform a dance titled “Set the World on Fire.”

Jillian Nicole Johnannes of Erie County is the daughter of James and Laurie Johannes of Erie. She is a senior at Mercyhurst Preparatory High School. Johannes, who plans to attend Georgetown or Boston universities, will perform a vocal presentation titled “Lothlorien.”

Jenna Elizabeth Natale of Lawrence County is the daughter of Anthony and Joni Natale of Edinburgh. She is a senior at Mohawk High School. Natale, who plans to attend Westminster College, will present a lyrical dance titled “Let It Be.”
