SOMERSET â" A celebrity golf tournament is being planned to raise additional funds for the completion of the Flight 93 NationalâMemorial.
Pittsburgh-area celebrities will take part in the event that is sponsored by Somerset County Chamber of Commerce and the Somerset Country Club. The tournament will be hosted by former All-Pro Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Louis Lipps.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 at the country club with a shotgun start at noon. The event includes lunch, on-course refreshments, a reception and concludes with a barbecue dinner, silent and Chinese auctions and an awards ceremony.
Along with Lipps, legendary Pittsburgh Pirates closer Kent Tekulve, who played on the Piratesâ 1979 World Series-winning team, leads the list of former athletes who will be taking part in the charity golf outing. Tekulve will be joined by four-time Super Bowl winning Steelers tight end Randy Grossman and former Penguins star Pierre Larouche.
Other celebrities who have confirmed their participation include former Steelers Emil Boures, Robin Cole, Steve Fedell, Tony Jeter, Marv Kellum and Dwayne Woodruff, former NBA shooting guard Myron Brown, and Carnegie Mellon University baseball head coach Claudio Reilsono. Additional celebrities are expected to take part in the event with a celebrity completing each foursome of golfers.
The event, now in its second year, raised more than $11,000 last year. The National Park Service matched that amount.
In addition to the golf outing, the Somerset Country Club will host the Louis Lippsâ Tailgate Party on Sept. 9. A picnic-style meal will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., with big-screen TV viewing of the Steelers opening game against the Denver Broncos to follow. Joining Lipps at the tailgate party will be former All-Pro and two-time Super Bowl champion linebacker Andy Russell.
Participation in the Flight 93 Memorial Celebrity Golf Tournament, which includes all-day tournament activities and admission to the Sept. 9 tailgate party, is $900 per threesome or $300 per person. Spectator passes, which include lunch and drinks from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., are also available for $30. All-day tickets, which include the reception and dinner, are $100. Tickets for the Louis Lippsâ Tailgate Party are $30 per person, or $10 for just the game.
Various sponsorship opportunities also are available for both the tournament and the tailgate party. All proceeds benefit the Flight 93 Memorial Fund.
