PITTSBURGH (AP) â" The Pittsburgh Steelers showed flashes of brilliance on both sides of the ball in a 38-7 preseason romp over Buffalo on Saturday night, though it came at a significant cost.
According to an ESPN report, DeCastro dislocated his knee cap, tore his medial collateral ligament (MCL) and suffered some damage to his patellar tendon. But his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is intact.
The team is unsure if the 2012 first-round draft pick will be able to return this season after receiving the results of his MRI on Sunday, according to ESPN.
DeCastro was hurt while pass blocking as Pittsburgh faced third-and-8 at its 6-yard line on its second possession in Saturday night's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. DeCastro's right leg twisted beneath him after being bowled over by defensive tackle Marcell Dareus.
DeCastro, the 24th overall selection out of Stanford who started Saturdayâs game over Ramon Foster, lay in the end zone for a few minutes as trainers worked on his leg. He briefly got up on his own, but was unable to put any weight on his right leg. He took a few hops before trainers stopped him and called for a cart.
Defensive end Brett Keisel hurt his left ankle late in the first quarter and did not return as well.
âWe held him out as a precaution,â Tomlin said. âI think heâs got a mild high ankle (sprain). He should be ready to go for us.â
Pittsburghâs defensive line is already depleted with defensive tackle Casey Hampton sitting out his third preseason game while coming off right knee surgery. Hampton is practicing with the team after being activated off the physically-unable-to-perform list on Aug. 17.
Meanwhile, Tomlin didnât have any update on receiver Mike Wallaceâs status. Wallace has been in a contract holdout since the beginning of training camp.
The Steelers (2-1) wrap up the exhibition schedule on Thursday against Carolina (1-1).
