PITTSBURGH (AP) â" Federal prosecutors in western Pennsylvania want a suspended Roman Catholic priest to serve eight to 10 years in prison for possessing and receiving thousands of child pornography images he viewed on his church computer.
A sentencing memo filed Sunday requests an above-minimum sentence for the Rev. Bartley Sorensen because his searching for and acquisition of child pornography lasted at least a decade.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Sorensen's attorney has requested the mandatory minimum of five years.
Sorensen was arrested in December after an employee at Saint John Fisher Parish in Churchill noticed him looking at a photo of a young boy on his computer. A search turned up thousands of images.
Sorensen, who was ordained at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Beaver in 1976, pleaded guilty in May. His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 13.
